New Chapter

And so starts a new chapter in my life; although I will remain a perpetual tourist my days as a perpetual traveller are all but over. Last week I signed over a large portion of my savings in exchange for 4.3 hectares and a house in Uruguay! We move in next week, and I'm really looking forward to it.

It means a whole new set of challenges and problems to solve, which tbh is just what the doctor ordered. I've been stagnating a little over the past couple of years or so, not really enjoying playing poker for a living, but grinding away all the same in order to pay for this stab at living 'the good life'.

It's been a long-term ambition of mine to live as self-sufficiently as possible, to drop off the grid as it were, so with the purchase of this small-holding I take a big leap towards that goal.

All this means I have fresh stuff to blog about too! Why I chose Urgugay for e.g, how easy it was opening an offshore bank account here with a UK passport only, the process of buying land here etc etc.

The house looks nice! What's the plan for the land?

Buying houses in odd countries is kind of my equivalent to your poker, so it would be great to hear about how the process of buying it.

Hey Martin, I'm thinking lemons! Apparently they're the most hardy, productive and easy-to-manage crop around these parts. Have more research to do though. Will definitely have a few cows also, as we eat a lot of beef.

Got lots to blog about so will keep the updates re how to buy etc coming when we're settled in.

Fred - we're about halfway between Montevideo and Punta del Este, nice and close to the beach also.

Congrats on the home. If you're not that familiar with livestock then I would recommend naming them things like 'Dinner' as it constantly reminds you of what their purpose is. Having only a few makes them a lot more like pets and makes it tough to finish them off.

Just discovered your blog, and now you are settling down. I hope you continue posting material on your experience.

I am a follower of the 5 flags philosophy and have three of the five so far. Going for the 4th in a few months with a job relocation.

Uruguay is on my list of final retirement locations. Would like to hear a running comment from you on life there.

Good luck to you and I will be subscribing to your RSS feed.

When ever I think of your blog I always think of the post where you made a hash of asking your girlfriend something like to suck your balls in Spanish!
